Empty Rooms

empty-rooms

A life well lived
Hallmark says is a goal
I should strive for
But did they mean to include
The sight of burning embers
In all the rooms
That my soul still walks
The rooms littered
With the boots of firemen
And their long johns strewn across the floor
Like a battlefield
Like a staging ground
All the fires add up to a raging inferno
And now the rooms are dead and done
And grey with the fallout
“Scorched Earth” a term she loved
But she and I have sat in the flames
And learned how to set expectation
Aspiration vs. Reality
to aspirate chunks of disappointment and bile
gargling in the bitter drink
of a life well lived.
